Beer Landwatermelon Gaming

KELLY A. FROM NORMAN, OK, ASKS: A friend of mine said that if you eat watermelon and drink beer (or drink beer and eat watermelon…I’m not sure if the order matters) you will get really sick or maybe even die. That’s the first time I ever heard of that. Is it true?

Wow. That’s the first time I, too, have heard that extremely cautionary advice. Based on personal experience (many instances of eating watermelon and drinking beer), I can attest that I’ve never experienced any ill effects from combining these two delicious barbeque staples. Then again, I could have some sort of watermelon/beer immunity, so I took to the Internet and asked a few knowledgeable friends to see if there was any truth to the rumor.

That's mostly because overeager pre-gaming will decrease blood flow to your penis. And even if you do manage to get it up, being blotto will almost certainly decrease the intensity of your orgasm. Another way in which too much drink is bad for your dink: Studies show that 60% of STDs are transmitted when alcohol is involved. Shane Monteiro of New York City’s Carmine Street Beers lists his favorite craft beers for the summer—from Burial Beer Company’s Ceremonial Session to Transmitter’s G3 and beyond.

It turns out, you’re not the only one with questions about combining beer and watermelon. I was able to find a few more inquiries (here and here) from concerned watermelon and beer lovers, but the answer I’ll give you is the same one they received: The rumor about watermelon and beer being dangerous if combined is 100 percent false. Of course, that’s assuming you’re consuming both in moderation. If you down too much watermelon or drink too many beers, you might feel some ill effects, but it won’t be from the combination of the two ingredients.

So if the misguided advice is nothing but urban legend, the real question is: Who started the tall tale? Unfortunately I wasn’t able to pinpoint that answer, but my guess is that it’s the same person who spread the rumor about watermelon seeds growing in your stomach if you swallow them.

Beer and watermelon are two of summer’s iconic refreshers, so combining them in a light, refreshing cocktail is a no-brainer. A little bit of Créole Shrubb—an orange liqueur from Martinique that uses agricole rum, not neutral spirits, as a base—adds mystery, complexity, and a subtle perfume.

Set a fine-mesh strainer over a large bowl; set aside.
Remove the rind from the watermelon and cut the flesh into large dice.
Place half of the watermelon in a blender and blend until liquified, about 1 minute. Pour through the strainer into the bowl and scrape a rubber spatula against the inside surface of the strainer to push the juice through until only pulp remains. Discard the pulp and set the strainer back over the bowl. Repeat with the remaining watermelon. (You should have about 6 cups of juice.)
Add the sugar to the juice and stir until dissolved, about 2 minutes. Refrigerate until chilled, about 1 1/2 hours, or until ready to use.
When ready to serve, transfer the chilled juice to a 3-quart container. Add the Creole Shrubb liqueur and beer and stir gently to combine.
